That's normal. The lesson is built around control, confidence and safe progression. You won't be thrown in the deep end.
You get live radio coaching while you ride — not vague instructions shouted from the shore. Real feedback, in real time.
Most students start as complete beginners. The lesson is designed to build confidence first, then flight.
Developed by Vasco Vellez, founder of eFoilgc and creator of the School of Foiling training system on the Gold Coast. Every lesson is designed to build confidence first, then flight.
Learn stance, balance, safety and throttle control on land before heading onto the water.
Build body awareness, board control and smooth transitions before attempting sustained flight.
Progress from stable board control to your first controlled foil flight above the water.
Receive real-time instruction while riding, so you can adjust, improve and build confidence faster.
Vasco Vellez has delivered 900+ lessons and taught 800+ students. The School of Foiling Method is based on real-world coaching experience, live radio instruction and a safety-first progression system designed for complete beginners.
The School of Foiling was not built from a textbook. It was built from years of testing, falling, adjusting and working out what actually helps beginners progress.
Before eFoils became mainstream, Vasco was already hydrofoiling on the Gold Coast and helping shape the sport locally. That experience became the foundation for a calmer, safer and more structured way to learn.
Today every lesson combines live radio coaching, structured progression and real-world equipment knowledge so you can learn faster, safer and with confidence.
Meet VascoSchool of Foiling is designed for curious beginners, future eFoil owners and adventurous humans who want to learn properly — without being thrown in the deep end.
Everything people ask before taking their first hydrofoil lesson. Real answers from private coaching experience on the Gold Coast.
Yes. Most students arrive having never hydrofoiled before. eFoilgc has taught students from 8 to 78 years young, and every lesson is adapted to the rider's confidence, mobility and experience. Learning is not about being naturally talented. It is about following a proven progression and getting the right coaching at the right moment.
No. Most students are complete beginners. Before anyone goes onto the water, we begin with a ground component covering the equipment, safety basics, stance, balance, throttle control and the movement patterns that make foiling easier. By the time you enter the water, you already understand what the board should do and how your body should respond.
No. You do not need exceptional strength or athletic ability. If you are comfortable in the water and have reasonable mobility, you can learn to hydrofoil. The lesson progresses at your pace, and breaks are taken whenever required.
Age is rarely the deciding factor. We have coached students from 8-year-old children through to 78-year-old adults. Everyone learns differently, so every lesson is adapted to suit your confidence, balance and physical ability rather than forcing everyone through the same program.
Yes. You need to be a competent swimmer and comfortable in the water. You do not need elite swimming ability, but basic swimming confidence is essential for a water-based lesson. Your instructor stays close and beginner lessons are held in controlled conditions.
Yes. The minimum lesson age is 8, with suitability assessed individually. Riders under 17 need a parent or guardian involved. If you are unsure whether a child is ready, contact eFoilgc before booking.
Possibly, yes. eFoilgc assesses mobility, physical ability and support requirements case by case because every rider is different. Contact us before booking so we can understand what you need and whether the lesson can be adapted appropriately.
Yes. The current maximum rider weight for an eFoilgc lesson is 105 kg. This limit is based on the teaching equipment and the stability and performance needed for beginner progression. If you are close to the limit, contact us before booking.
Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, drinking water and a sense of adventure. We will provide the hydrofoil, helmet, impact vest and everything else you will need for your lesson. During the cooler months, we recommend wearing your own wetsuit or thermal wetsuit top to stay warm while learning. As wetsuits are personal items, we do not provide them for hygiene reasons.
Yes. Family and friends are welcome to watch from the shoreline and share the experience. Many students enjoy having someone there to see their first flights.
Every lesson begins on land. We introduce the equipment, explain the safety basics and practise the body position, balance and control techniques you will use later on the water. This ground preparation reduces confusion, builds confidence and helps students progress faster once the board starts moving.
Most students experience their first controlled flights during their first lesson. The goal is not simply to get the board flying. The goal is to build control first, then introduce lift so your first flights feel smooth, safe and repeatable rather than accidental.
This is one of the biggest differences in how we teach. Instead of shouting instructions from the shore, your instructor speaks to you through a two-way radio helmet while you are riding. Small corrections at exactly the right moment help you avoid common mistakes, adjust faster and build confidence throughout the lesson.
Private coaching means the entire lesson is built around your progress. You are not waiting for a group or being rushed through a fixed program. You receive focused instruction, live feedback and a lesson adapted to your confidence, ability and learning speed.
You will probably fall a few times, and that is completely normal. Falling is part of learning any board sport. The lesson is designed around calm water, safe progression and real-time coaching, so every attempt becomes another step toward control.
You learn on premium hydrofoils selected for beginner coaching. Stable, well-matched equipment makes the first lesson easier because you can focus on stance, balance and control instead of fighting the board.
It looks harder than it feels once you understand the basics. The biggest challenge is learning how small body movements affect the foil. With the right progression, most people are surprised by how quickly the feeling starts to make sense.
We do not simply hand you a board and hope for the best. The School of Foiling Method builds confidence first, then flight. Ground preparation, controlled progression and live radio coaching help students avoid guessing and correct small mistakes before they become big ones.
The most common mistakes are trying to force the board into the air, standing too early, looking down, leaning too far back and making movements that are too big. Good coaching helps you stay calm, balanced and patient while the foil begins to lift.
That depends on your goal. Many students are happy after experiencing their first flights. Others continue coaching to develop smoother control, better turns, stronger confidence and eventually ocean riding.
Some people treat it as an unforgettable experience. Others keep progressing, book more coaching or start looking at their own equipment. If buying an eFoil is your goal, learning first helps you understand what actually suits your size, confidence and riding style.
Absolutely. It is one of the smartest things you can do. You will feel what foiling is really like before investing in your own eFoil or hydrofoil setup, and you will make a better equipment decision afterwards.
Lessons are usually held at Currumbin Basin on the Gold Coast. The protected water makes it an ideal learning environment for beginners. Final location details are confirmed when you book.
A standard eFoil lesson is 90 minutes. This includes the land-based briefing and preparation, progressive on-water coaching and time to review what you learned. The exact balance between land and water time can vary slightly with the rider and conditions.
Yes. eFoilgc offers both eFoil and Wingfoil lessons on the Gold Coast. Wingfoil sessions depend on suitable wind conditions and rider level. Choose the relevant lesson when booking, or contact eFoilgc if you are unsure which foiling pathway suits you.
Safety comes first. If conditions are not suitable for learning, we will contact you and arrange another suitable time. The goal is to teach in conditions that give you the best chance to learn safely and enjoy the experience.
Lesson packs are available for riders who want structured progression over more than one session. eFoilgc coaching remains private and focused on the individual rider rather than becoming a group coaching lesson.
Yes. eFoilgc gift vouchers are available online. Choose from the current values and options on the Gift Voucher booking page, or contact eFoilgc if you want help choosing the right foiling experience.
